Using Spreadsheets to Calculate and Track Emissions
Emissions calculations have traditionally been performed
using spreadsheets. With the increase in the number of
oil and gas facilities that need to report emissions, this
method is no longer viable for most oil and gas companies.
Spreadsheet programs quickly become inefficient for these
types of calculations: they are not designed to manage
large volumes of data, year after year, or to easily extract
historical information. They provide neither
transparency nor auditability, which are two of the main
requirements as emissions trading programs develop over the
coming years.
Furthermore, spreadsheets do not provide the capability
for data integration from other sources, which enables the
calculation of emissions more frequently, and the
management/reduction of those emissions more efficiently.
